U.S. SEVERS TIES TO IRAN
WASHINGTON (AP-Staff) - The United States has severed economic ties with Iran and wants Russia's President Boris Yeltsin to cancel a "disturbing" nuclear deal with Tehran. It set the stage for conflict at next week's Moscow summit between Yeltsin and U.S. President Bill Clinton.
White House aides said the stiffened sanctions against Iran will mostly hurt U.S. firms in the oil industry.
WIVES VISIT JAILED HUBBIES IN IRAQ
BAGHDAD (AP) - Two U.S. women described their tearful reunion with their imprisoned husbands and said they hoped Iraq would soon free the men.
Linda Barloon and Kathy Daliberti said their husbands, who were arrested March 13 after crossing into Iraq from Kuwait and sentenced to eight years, were in good health and anxious to go home.
Before the Sunday afternoon visit, William Barloon and David Daliberti had had no link to the outside world in two weeks.
GENEROUS PRIEST GETS MUGGED
NEW YORK (AP) - An 85-year-old priest was mugged in the confessional by a man who begged him for some money and asked to make a confession, police said.
Rev. Raymond Dendon gave some change to the man, who then asked the priest to hear his confession. Inside the confessional, the man grabbed the priest's arm through the screen and threatened to break it unless the priest gave him more money.
BASEBALL-SIZED HAIL HALTS AIRLINE
GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) - American Airlines cancelled 199 jet flights and about 100 commuter runs yesterday because planes had been damaged by hail as big as softballs.
Fifty-one American jets and 24 smaller American Eagle planes remained out of service because of a Saturday night thunderstorm at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
MANDELA FLEES SHOTS AT RALLY
UMLAZI, South Africa (Reuter) - President Nelson Mandela was escorted from a rally in the Zulu heartland in an armored car after about 30 shots were fired in and around the stadium where he was speaking yesterday.
"I don't think he himself was scared but lots of shots were fired so we took him away in a Nyala (armored car)," Maj. Robbie Cooke said.
UNABOMBER IN SKIN MAGAZINE?
NEW YORK (AP) - Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione said he would publish the Unabomber's manifesto and put his public relations team behind the effort "in order to save lives."
In a letter to The New York Times last week, the alleged bomber promised to stop his 17-year reign of terror if a major media outlet published his 29,000-word manifesto.
MURDER PLOT CHARGE DROPPED
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Prosecutors agreed yesterday to drop charges against the daughter of Malcolm X in a plot to murder Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Qubilah Shabazz, 34, who saw her father murdered 30 years ago, agreed to abandon allegations of an FBI frame-up and seek treatment for alcohol and psychiatric problems.
Prosecutors agreed to drop the charges after two years if Shabazz completes treatment and stays out of legal trouble.
If convicted, she faced up to 90 years in prison and a $ 2.25 million fine.
