THE Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley looked most unlike the hit TV show's outrageously boozy Patsy when she collected an OBE from Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace yesterday.

Last month her role in the BBC series won her a BAFTA award as best comedy actress.

Actress Marsha Fitzalan (42), whose father is Britain's leading Catholic peer, the Duke of Norfolk, has divorced.

Ms Fitzalan who played Rik Mayall's wife in the New Statesman comedy series, received the final decree ending her 18-year marriage to actor Patrick Ryecart (42) last weekend. Their marriage at Westminster Cathedral was conducted by Cardinal Basil Hume.

Dame Vera Lynn said her VE Day 50 years ago was just "another working day" at the theatre where she sang all the "obvious songs".

The 78-year-old singer was speaking after she launched a new set of stamps.

New York City remembered a jazz great with a ceremony naming Duke Ellington Circle at the gateway to Harlem where Duke Ellington's 25-foot bronze statue will soon be erected. "You'll be able to look up and hear the strains of Sophisticated Lady," said former mayor David Dinkins.

Disgruntled Church of England vicars are flocking to join a trade union. Hundreds of clergy, upset about the church's decision to abolish their "freehold" housing pack have joined the Manufacturing Science and Finance union.

Bob Guccione, publisher of Penthouse and Omni magazines, said that Penthouse would publish a lengthy manifesto by the alleged Unabomber in the US if it would prevent further bombings.
